It used to be the case that if you built a website on a specific subject they would be relatively little competition. The result would be that your website would rank in the first page of any search engine with relatively little effort. Things moved on very quickly and with more people getting connected to the Internet competition for the first page on the search engines became tougher and it became harder and harder to increase traffic on your website without any additional effort.

When Google's search engine was launched Webmasters had to adapt to the way it operated and decided what pages need to go where the search results. Google developed algorithms that were specifically designed to rank webpages in terms of what Google saw as important at the time. These algorithms regularly change to adapt to the growing needs of the Internet search audience. Whilst one web page may be considered important to Google at a certain time; an algorithm change may mean that any page that Google considered important may no longer be important to the new algorithm. The result was a drop in search engine ranking and subsequent traffic.
